I have read that now is the time to plant up some lily bulbs in pots, so that in the summer you can place them in the beds to fill in any gaps.

Sound like a good idea, although I've never grown lilies before.

    Any advice please?

Buy the largest plumpest bulbs you can afford. The tiny ones sold in some shops do not always flower so well. Also check that the roots coming from the base of the bulb are not too dried out (like straw) or that there is any sign of mould on the basal plate itslef.

Yes, it's a good way to do it as you can grow them in pots and then plunge them into any gaps in the borders later in the season.
Use nice deep pots, put broken crocks in the bottom and use a good general purpose compost with a bit of grit to help drainage.
Not sure about when or what to feed, maybe someone else will help you there.
    Good luck [IMG]
