Lime

    Hi

    Does anyone use lime on their gardens i was talking to someone this morning and he spreads some lime about before planting onions he said it is good for them ???

    It used to be the fashion to give your onion beds a dusting of lime before planting.

    I don't see the point myself if the ph level is ok.

    If you had quite an acidic soil then fair enough as onions like it to be around ph6 to neutral,but to add lime without testing,I don't understand.

    I use it on my brassica bed as I've found it helps reduce club root. I test to assertain the ph and then add lime accordingly.
    Seems to work as I've significantly reduced club root since I started this regime.
    Can't comment about the effect on onions though.

    If you practice growing in rotation, then add lime to the area which is growing brassicas the following year. That year you lime every four years and should keep the balance right.
