I am unsure as to whether I should line the pots of the plants in the pictures below. They are both just in soil. However, I have seen some youtube videos recommending that aquatic plant pot should be lined. Then I saw one video advising that a plant which looked like the large plant in the first image should be placed just in gravel and so no need for liner to prevent soil leakage.

    What do you think?

    THANKS

    Big holes or small holes.
I bought some years ago that had fairly large holes, and to contain soil they needed to be lined with hessian, but later they started to make them with much finer holes.

Really if the soil cant wash out the pots then you dont need to line them.
I just put some pea shingle on top.

Some plants are able to live just on the nutrient in the water and for those just some pea shingle to hold them in place should be ok.

      Hi,

If you want to use soil, use proper Aquatic soil that has no nutrients, so reducing aglea.
      Garden soil is not recommended.

The pot should be lined with hessian to stop the soil leaching out and the top of the pot should be covered in gravel to stop fish etc from distrubing the soil, creating more muck.

If using pots we just use gravel to hold the plant in place and to weigh the whole pot down.

IMG_20220607_102621.jpg IMG_20220607_102615.jpg Re the large plant in the first image, it is currently in this pot, but I am thinkiing of transfering it to a bigger pot. Do you think looking at the size of the holes in this pot there is no need to use a liner if using aquatic soil?

I think you can line it, it will contain the soil better, but if just planting in gravel then I don't think so.
I would plant oxygenating plants in just gravel myself.
I've always found that the planting crates with holes end up with very little soil in them any way after a season, it washes out whatever you use. Or maybe my fish dig it out.
