This may well be controversial to some but I've never been interested in women doing 'mens' sports but I must say I'm rather hooked to this World cup and looking forward to the final... Come on Ladies you can do it
I'm not really a football fan but do take some notice of internationals, I've always thought of women's football as the slow motion version of the real game, but credit where credit is due, they have done really well after some shaky moments. It was good that they got a really convincing win over Australia. Just hope by starting this thread @lolimac you haven't put the mockers on them .
I don't like women in contact sports. Yesterday J said I was a sexist!!! Maybe I am I told him, but I was brought up when women were women and behaved in accordance. In saying that, friends of ours of 40+ years who often visit us here have two daughters and the first one was a national football player in the UK.
I don't see why women and men can't play football or any other game. It's just a game - women and men can both play tennis, and play in the same game sometimes - what's the difference ? However, to me all sport is boring whoever plays it And I'm not English so I don't care who won ... but it's nice for you all though
Football isn't a contact sport but I understand what you're saying. I prefer the women's game as they actually get on and play rather than give a load of theatrics on the pitch. They're just as talented as the blokes
As they get paid more and more in the next few years I'm sure the amateur theatrics will start to find a way.
Footballers are not allowed to get muddy anymore, in the old days there was never any grass around the goal mouth it was just a mud bath. As to sweatiness, they probably have a bath at half time these days.
It is great fun to watch not quite as physical as the mens game. It is really special as it’s great to get one over the Australians .⚽️⚽️⚽️
Being mucky and sweaty is not one of the differences between men and women. Both can be that, and both can be the opposite.
I really, really hope the win. Not because I'm interested in football, I'm not at all. Not because I'm especially patriotic. I care about England just the same as I care about every other part of the world. Not because women have a long history of being unfairly overlooked, or in some cases oppressed. I think most of the world is already making good progress on that front, especially the more civilised parts. None of that. I really, really want the women to win so that a minority of blokes that despite evidence to the contrary, still dismiss them as rubbish, can make a bazillion excuses about why the men's team is best while they continue waiting for the rest of their lives for the men's team to win, while constantly bringing up the fact that they won once in 1966. In my other leisure activity of martial arts, men and women train together. Due to the very nature of the activity we get very sweaty indeed and routinely drip sweat on eachother as we get very, very up close and personal. One of my favourite moments was when during a specific practice, it was my job to play the role of the larger aggressor, and had to put a young lady in a head lock so she could practice escaping. Immediately prior to this we'd be free sparring, basically light contact version of beating each other up (there is no malice, it's just a slightly rough version of play fighting, but it's still very sweaty). So literally drenched in sweat, I put the young lady in a head lock. Her task was to whack me in the belly, stick her hand across my sweat drenched face to push my head backwards and loosen my grip, break my grip, and slide her head out. She nearly did it perfect. I should point out I'd trained with this lady many times and we had a deep level of trust. With anyone else, I'd have let go as soon as they did the technique. But this lady was keen that we practice as close to real as possible. Her attitude was if she can't do it in training conditions, she can't do it for real. So I clung on as tight as I dared without choking her. She managed to do the technique well enough to escape, but not without somehow smudging her face right against my sweaty, rancid armpit. We both had a right good laugh as she wiped my armpit sweat off her face. One thing that becomes very clear in martial arts is that women are very much our equals. They laugh at the same things, get frustrated at the same things, train as hard as the men, and in sparring, they fight as hard as the men. Sure sometimes there's a size and weight difference. The women just learn to move faster or smarter to make up for it. Back to football, the women's team is not an inferior copy of the men's team. They are at least as talented and capable, and if we're going to support the England team in an international tournament, then that should apply equally to the women as well as the men. I've watched a few of the games. The women are just better.
So looking forward to the Final on Sunday morning. Champagne on ice to toast our Girls at the end of the match with a chorus or two of Sweet Caroline... Whoop Whoop WHOOOOP , Jenny namaste
I've been watching the women's football for a few years, it's the game as it should be played. There is none of the amateur dramatics prevalent in the men's game. Got to laugh at some of the comments on this thread, football isn't a contact sport for starters. I'll be proudly watching in my ladies team shirt along with my own lioness Misty
