To quote Johnathan Ross "I could eat my own weight in Liquorice & one day fully intend to."

Yum I like Liquorice too.. I have never even thought about trying to grow it Zigs.. It used to be a good little industry here, but not any more to speak of here... From one of the old Liquorice growing families...
Seems you harvest the rhizomes & over winter the crowns ready for planting the following year... Do let us know if you are going to try it..
This is a very interesting family site.. Sweet Liquorice - Glycyrrhiza glabra

Often though of giving it a go Ziggy.

Am I right in thinking it takes more than one season to get a decent crop?

What do you actually use liquorice for when you have grown it Ziggy ? Make Pontefract cakes , liquorice allsorts or them horrible liquorice sticks I used to chew as a kid , they tasted awful but were cheap and lasted forever :thumb:

        Hey Harry,

I'd use the roots as an expectorant, get a Hockle the size and colour of a large tabby cat up with some of that.

Seriously though, I was thinking of a sweetner for baking & things, it contains a compound that begins with g that I can't spell that is 50 times sweeter than sugar.

Scared of making extract as I boiled up 2 roots to make a cough medicine once but forgot about the laxitive effect, had to run to the bog:(
