This may already have been mentioned, but in recent days I've received e-mails which warn me that there has been 'unusual activity' with my on-line banking and they suggest that someone has been attempting to access my account.

Normally, I'd be pretty concerned, but these e-mails are supposedly coming from Lloyds TSB and I don't now, nor have I ever had, any account with Lloyds - internet or otherwise.

Just to see what the e-mail said, I opened one of them and it merely repeats the fact that there has been this 'unusual activity' and gives a link which I'm supposed to open. I've no idea what happens thereafter as I've deleted these e-mails at this point, since as I say, I have no accounts with Lloyds TSB, but anyone who does might just want to bear this in mind.

There are just so many such scams about now - they are all looking for you to log onto their site which they have made look like the official bank site. Then they ask you to log in thus revealing your ID and passwords.

It is not wise to even open these e-mails in case there is a virus attached. However I have seen it said that only 4% of malevolent computer activity is caused now by viruses, and most of the other 96% by people freely giving away passwords.

My general rule is that when people approach me over anything - they want to make money from me. they don't have my best interests at heart.

There's so many of these. Last year I had this purporting to be from the IRS.

Yeah, like I was going to click on that link! I took a print off the the tax office and they sent it to their spam team.

Just for info, they wouldn't require you to do that - if there was a refund coming, they'd pay it straight into your account and send you a confirmatory letter by snailmail!

Of yes, and neither would they say 964 GBP, it would be £964. And would never sign off "Best Regards"!!!!! But it looks so genuine, doesn't it?

Fake emails purporting to be from Paypal are also doing the rounds.

Your bank should not be contacting you requesting you do any of these things by email. Keep remembering that and hit that delete button whenever you receive these emails. In the extremely slim chance that you delete a genuine email from your bank or credit card company, it's not the end of the world.

Yes it is a Scam , Fidgetsmum.
They are Phishing for banking information.
Always just Delete those messages, whether you have an account with the organization or not.
If your bank has something to tell you, or something they want to know, they will write to you.
But you should report the phoney e-mail to the bank. They do have a system for reporting Phishing.
These people can be caught and the banks are supposed to be working on it. But they do depend on reports of problems.

Agree with Alice and others. I've had the same from th Halifax (never had an account with them) and Natwest (same).
Another odd one keeps cropping up, I get messages purporting to be from UPS telling me that my package coulld not be delivered and asking me to open 'the attachment'. On each occasion I have attempted to follow this suggestion my AVG protection system tells me it could be a virus/other so off it goes.

They come from them all, Abbey, Halifax, Natwest, Lloyds, Barclays. They just change the names and send them out. They can send out hundreds of thousands and it takes just a 0.1% response and they are laughing all the way to the bank (with your details). It will grow more common as we are forced by the banks to go-online and people get caught out.
