My local educational farm has tons of straw and manure it's a city farm and underneath the pile its soft and brown and does not smell so have just placed around my garden, there is only a tiny bit of mixed fresh straw. I collected 11 heavy duty bags so far. I know it's not the best time but it seems rotted down.

My bins are full , I am waiting for a horror story now!

    Thanks

OK, a horror story - 'It was a dark and stormy night....' :D

Rotted manure gets darker as it rots down so it may have a way to go yet but will still improve the soil. Did the farm say how long it had been rotting?

Lucky you!:)...I'd be careful of a slug/snail explosion though. I had a problem last year after mulching my borders with farmyard muck.

In the end I collected nearly 30 bags and mulched nearly all my front and back, I have 6 bags of fresher straw and manure that I will add to the compost bins as they drop down or I get the time to turn.

It got a bit hard to find the really rotted stuff. My bins need the straw as there is too much soft fruit and veg peelings. Will pop back in 6 weeks perhaps or leave till autumn.

I'll keep an eye out for the slugs and snails!
