Location, Location, Location ...

This is directed at all Newcomers and Members who have not already done so.

If you put your Location in your personal details, other Members can decide as to whether to give advice or not. Example, I who live in a hot/dry climate cannot accurately advise someone in a cold/snowy climate and vice/versa.

For those who don't know, if you click on that Member's location, a Goggle map will appear showing the location listed (if true). I think it should be a mandatory field to fill in on application to a Gardening Forum.

Just food for thought.

 

I didn't know that! Now instead of doing something useful I have spent half the morning playing with Google maps. Thanks.

Have to say we agree that the application to join the forum should give the true location, as part of the verification process, which the moderators can also get from the IP address anyway.

However we cannot agree to the default giving out members more detailed location, rather than say just a county as we had specified.
When clicking on our location it took us to our actual town, so have specifed a different, though nearby town, you just cannot be too careful with all the scammers, trolls and nutters on web these days.

Thanks for the heads up though, going to check on other forums we use to ensure they are not doing the same thing with their Location field.

 

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree not with specifics but one can be fairly safe putting the area or county so other folk know which country/county etc, north or south.

 

I haven't put mine in, as it can be very easy to find another member, i tryed it and found a member easly, found they're name,town,road and the number of there house and i'm not very good with computer's just a bit of serching, but if a member is ok with there detail showing then that up to them, but i, as a shy person like to be a bit of a black horse

No, @Jiffy is safely by Northumbrian Water (I guess Google tries it's best to find the nearest best guess based on you own ip address)

 

A bit strange as checking someone elses location ie Dorset it just shows the whole south west or like @pete above, just the whole south east.

Yet our location when specifying as either Yorks or Yorkshire, still homed in on our town ??

Had to change the Location to a different town before it would stop showing our actual town.

 

@Victoria & @Selleri interested to know what location you can find on us, it should hopefully show up as Sheffield now ??

@ricky101 I show Sheffield with the Botanical Gardens and Millennium Galleries in the middle. You are only showing Sheffield not the Yorkshires.

Beginning to think if the Location field does not contain a precise town or county then it defaults to the persons IP address to show a google map, if so, I would say that might not be a good thing to do ??

 

If you click on my location and you get photos to the left, it shows some pretty locales ... I am south toward the sea, north is to the mountains.

 

I do not have an issue naming my commune. I know the New Marie will protects us...

 

So would it be wise to remove which County we live in? Trouble is I don't know how to this?
