Could I urge people to put their locations in information as so much gardening advice depends on where you are. Inverness is very different from Torquay in terms of what you can grow.

I've just said that on another thread, along with another member here. It's very important for giving accurate advice.

It's always been a problem, some people appear shy about putting in their location when registering, but just a rough location is all that is needed.
Unless of course you live at the top of a mountain, in which case it might be worth a mention.

In which case @pete, there will be very little growing apart from some alpines, tucked in among rocks and scree. You can forget your flimsy perennial salvias and lupins!

Couldn't agree more! Soil type is useful too, not just when asking a question but also when answering one or just sharing experience. At some point I'll see if I can put that in my signature.

              Edit: It worked

@Jiffy Location only means roughly whereabouts you are in the country, South coast or Yorkshire, in a city or the wilds of Wales. It can help people to give you good advice for your gardening question.

@ Pete - 1300ft if you prefer ;), but we are on a steep hillside and only the terrace and dam bank are flat, so yes, a fair amount of mountaineering is involved:smile:

I'm in 2 places with different types of soil which can be a challenge. Both of us widowed, then met. He lives in Norfolk, I live in Dordogne, France, been there since 1985, dragged kicking and screaming by 1st OH. I love England but now I love France too. I brought up my 4 children in France who still live here and have produced 14 children. I'm not eco friendly, travel a lot between England and France, have 14 grandchildren in an over populated world, but I don't use pesticides.

In Norfolk the soil is easy, pretty sandy and well drained, but tends to dryness in summer. In France I have clay, sticky bog in winter and rock hard in summer. I have dug in loads of compost and it's improving. Dordogne winters can be colder than the UK and the summers are hotter and dryer.

We certainly do, only too often!
A couple of days this week we had to have the lights on all day, the hills disappeared and we couldn't see across the garden, let alone the fields.
But the compensation comes on clear days, even in winter, when you can look out and the view is changing from one minute to the next. On really good days the sun will set behind the forest and the hills will be bathed in sunset colours. Magical!
