This is your little hawthorn being trained for 'bonsai'
You will see it is coming on well, with the trunk thickening. It has not yet lost its leaves for winter,
What do you want me to do?

    Hi Billy :)

Oh, that is so sweet ... it really looks good. You can post it to me now if that's okay as I also have a Cotoneaster that I've been nuturing for a year sent by another GC member that is ready for potting up so I can do the two together. It's about November-time here when I do my trimming, tidying and re-potting (if necessary) of them all.

Thank you so much and I look forward to receiving it.

Sending you a PM ... it will probably lose it's leaves on the journey anyway so 'não faz mal' as we say .... it doesn't matter. :)

Pal, my answer is yes. :thumb: Want any help, please ask. :luv:

Would the leaves on holly not be a little too large to make a good bonsai subject?

No, actually, NO leaves are too large for a bonsai. Each time you strip them off, they grow smaller each time they regrow. My 15 year old Ivy is a prime example with the tiniest leaves now and came from the monstrosity that covered my garage in Bucks.

I should have some free time tomorrow to do a new pic of it to post.

    Now I am interested
I know very little about bonsai
Are you saying that you deliberately strip off the leaves? or is it that you wait for them to fall off in autumn?
I do know that trees have one set of secondary buds available if leaves get frosted etc but I would have thought that it would be dangerous to deliberately strip off a full set?
Lets see the pics and furnish some words of wisdom :)

    :) Evening Billy

Yes, I actually strip the leaves off .... before they drop on their own accord and with evergreens strip back annually to the stem until they grow and develop to the size I want as I train the trees into shape.

This is my Ivy today .... sorry, bad photo as I moved it out of it's filtered shade area into the outdoors and we are overcast ... the largest leaves struggle to be 3cm long and I am allowing it to grow around a 'failed' Serissa Seroides. This is basically the size I want it but if the leaves get any bigger .... off they come ....

Oh, must remember to phtoograph my Scorpion Bush tomorrow ... it's done exceptionally well and has bloomed on and off since I bought it. :thumb:
