I've had real problems getting here today to post this, could someone perhaps explain why?

Yesterday I had to get 'the man from Dell' to talk me through completely re-installing Windows 7 on this machine (don't ask - it's a loooong story). Anyway, with that done, programs re-installed and passwords retrieved from somewhere in the back of the brain (or off those pieces of paper we keep!), I visit GC and it asks me to login. Not really surprised by that, BUT - although it showed me as being here, I wasn't able to post anything "you need to login" I was told, so I did - again - and the same thing happened - in fact it happened about 6 times until I asked for a change of password.

Well, OK so I'm here now, but why suddenly should this happen - it didn't the last time I had to completely re-intal everything. Not a major problem I grant you, but just confused since I've had no problem with the other two forums I visit.

    (Psst - I hate computers!)

Computers have become an almost necessary evil haven't they Fidgetsmum. I have that malarkey occasionally too. I think GC has naughty days sometimes :catapult:

Psst, me too, and I built my career around them.

There have been one or two reports of similar problems, and behind the scenes we're trying to figure out what's going on. Do you mind if I ask a few questions about your machine and how you access GC?

    Such as:
    * What antivirus software do you use (eg Norton, AVG, Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials etc)?
    * What browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, Opera)?
    * How do you navigate to GC? (eg do you type gardenerscorner.co.uk in the address bar, www.gardenerscorner.co.uk, some other way)?

Your re-instal might be a red herring. There have been occasional glitches here, with pages not loading so it might be linked to that instead? The forum might have had one of those moments when you went to log in. When you had your re-instal it would have wiped all cookies etc off your machine, including your log in details for here. Combined, it may have conspired to cause you this hassle

I suppose that its possible that a cookie has been left behind on your PC which was still being 'seen' by the GC server despite your reinstall? I'm not so sure about Windows 7, but I know previous versions were a pain in the rump when reinstalled over the top of an existing installation, as they were sort of 'lazy' and didn't overwrite all parts of the old installation (oooh, that is already there, I won't bother reinstalling that, sort of thing)

If this is the case, as far as the GC server was concerned, you were logged in (because it could 'see' the cookie) but as far as your PC was concerned you weren't logged in, and when you were trying to do so the GC server was responding that it wasn't possible for you to log in as you already were?

Of course, the above could be complete and utter nonsense, and it was simply one of the wee gremlins that run around our electronic worlds creating havoc and confusing the life out of us!

To me, computers and women-folk are extremely similar - I swear that the day I properly understand them, the lid will be getting screwed onto my coffin :snork:

Well, this is the 4th or 5th time I've tried to post this, I log in, type, hit post reply and - zilch. I've tried changing my password, re-registering but GC won't let me cost of the email address being the same.

I'm using McAfee security and have done since I bought the machine 18 months ago
Use Internet Explorer and no matter how I access GC, via Google, the address bar or favourites the same thing happens.

            And now I'm deeply sad.

Have you tried using Firefox instead of Internet explorer?

Great Scott - it worked. Mind you, even if I now go off and look at another topic I'd have to login again to reply to anything. I did wonder if re-registering completely would work, but I'm not allowed to unless I use a different email address (and I've only got one account). I've tried to login and THEN change my password, but that doesn't work.

If you don't hear from me, please don't think I've ignored you, it's just that I can't reply.

Do you put www.gardenerscorner.co.uk in the address bar, or just gardenerscorner.co.uk without the www?

I still think that this is a cache issue. I'd suggest downloading CCleaner, setting it to clear all histories from all browsers, and running a clean. Good little program to have purely as a maintenance tool.

PS - I have to agree with the advice to use Firefox, as I have always found it to be a lot less 'huffy' than IE
