Ok so while you are waiting for the armed response team to turn up you offer the bloke with the big knife a cup of tea and ask him to wait.
Yes it's all sounding very English.

"Now come on son, you dont want to hurt anyone, do you?"
I' m old enough to remember "Dickson of Dock Green".

    "It's fair cop Guvnor."

    Oh @pete !!!!! :nonofinger:
They can and they *are* doing!!!!

This is where I feel so tempted to get angry (but, refuse!) yet still remain frustrated. The media has much to answer for. :nonofinger:

The Police are very much protecting the public, but, it doesn't really make for a great headline, or sell news.
Imagine: "The Police foiled yet another terrorist plot" on the front page of every newspaper every other day? We'd all be going *yawn-yawn-really?* :dunno:

For every instance of terrorism we see on the news/media, there are hundreds, *hundreds* of plots thwarted by those *unarmed* Police intelligence units doing a superb job, in an underfunded, under resourced!

It isn't weapons they need: it is people on the street - Joe Public! They need Joe Public to take some responsibility and adhere to their civic responsibilities and report suspicious behaviour. They need - just as in the days of the IRA - people going about their daily business to report anything which may seem a bit odd, a bit out of place, a bit ... peculiar?

It's all too easy and laid back to put all of the responsibility for PUBLIC safety into the hands of a chosen few. Come on guys! WE are all responsible for keeping our land a safe and terror free one! We all have a civic duty here!

I'll tell you what worries me as much, if not more in some ways, as the threat of terrorist attacks - its those within our society who do not have the education, knowledge or in some cases intelligence to think this situation through and debate it logically as we are doing now. I fear it is a matter of time until some of those people decide to take matters into their own hands - - maybe a truck and smash it into a Mosque or something.... God forbid, of course, but it doesn't take a massive leap of the mind to see it happening.

And of course, lacking in that knowledge, education or intelligence, anyone taking 'revenge' like that would not be able to calculate that they were targetting people who were in fact in the same boat as the rest of us, being horrified, angry and somewhat bewildered as to the events taking place around the world.

I wish I knew the answer, I really do, but it seems that it is beyond our elected leaders, so what chance do I have?

The long standing reasoning, pete, is that arm all the Police and there will be a rise in criminals arming themselves. We've had several Amnesty's over the decades where people have handed in firearms without fear of prosecution and, in general, all that gets handed over are old guns of various types by law abiding citizens and not the thousands of illegal weapons thought by the police to be out there.
Just take Knives for instance, the number Amnesty's we have had and yet, still, the number of knives being carried and the number of people being stabbed on the Streets, not counting Terrorists, is on the rise even with the rise of prison sentences for carrying a knife can be up to 4 years but in general offenders only received a 6 month sentence. Unfortunately, offenders carrying guns only receive, if they're over 18 years old, a maximum of 5 years and serve less routinely for good behavior. In my opinion, the sentence for carrying firearms should be doubled to a fully served 10 years.:dunno::coffee:

                OK so the reasoning is?
If we keep the law one step behind the criminal we will maintain the status quo?
err, yes, it seems to be working??????

As for Knife amnesties, never could see the point.
I can buy one in B&Q, or any supermarket, big enough to kill anyone if I want to.

Oh and I dont think someone who intends to die during an attack is particully worried about whether he gets 5 yrs or 10.

Armed Response can, if needed, be at an incident within minutes anywhere in the UK, pete, believe it or not. Not all ARG arrive in vans but are in normal looking, but fast, vehicles. It takes time to identify a real incident, pete, and you can quote as many examples as you like but the Police do a hard job well, while having to sort out what is a real call and what is not.:wallbanging::dunno::snorky:

The answers are there: if we look back in history to give us guidance.
For example, take our most recent lock-in with terrorism (the IRA). They fought for a cause which they felt passionate about but used unorthodox means to get their point across. IS are doing the same. Somewhere along the line, there is a bargaining power of some kind - the trick is to find it.
Remember: Sadam kept them under thumb and this has only blown up since Sadam's regime was eradicated. Look for the clues, locate the nub of it and the answer will present itself. Yup, might take a decade or three, but the answers are already there - it's just a matter of deciphering them, making the correct interpretation and then implementing the right process.

I refuse to believe it is a lost cause.

So far, they plan, execute and we react.

We need to plan how to react and pre-empt execution and how to thwart. Unfortunately, to build up that level of intelligence, we have to monitor how they go about their aims, what methods they use, what items them harness and how it all evolves.

We're in it for the long haul; there is no quick fix.

And that, talking in the context of a Terrorist Suicide Bomber, is the knub of that particular problem, pete, in that he/she is intending to cause as much death and destruction as possible and if stopped before their intended target will detonate the bomb where they are still causing death and destruction. But the sentences for carrying an offensive weapon or firearm are, obviously, not meant or designed for such Extremists so you taking such things out of context.:dunno::coffee:

No, pete , in that sentence you connected a suicidal Terrorist with laws designed for criminals carrying offensive weapons or firearms, and that takes it out of context.:dunno::snorky:
