OK in the abscence of a third arm or even an arm extension, I am trying to replace the tap washer on a water butt. I have managed to get the darn thing off but I cannot hold the tap and screw the plastic nut on from the inside at the same time as my head is in the butt. I have tried wedging it with bricks and swearing at it to no avail. Any ideas folks?? FRUSTRATED !!

Ange, don`t know about the terra cotta pots, but I bought 30 cheapie plastic ones from Wilkos, and I, and more importantly, the client, was well impressed. Why don`t you just ask someone to help you with the tap?:D

I donĀ“t suppose the cats could help? Or that you could use your feet? :D
There are things called... pinza a scatto... in italian...something like these:

If the tap is close enough to the ground or any other surface you clasp it with this... turn until the handhold of the tool rests upon the hard surface, blocking the tap, and then you can get to other side to screw the nut tight. Or you can do the contrary. Clasp the nut and screw the tap. One of these things can be of use in lots of ways when you need three paws ;)

Katy I know my Yoga classes stood me in good stead but REALLY!! OK picture the visual. Me, lay down or stood, I tried both. With my head down the bottom end of a barrel. I need to grab one part of the tap with my right hand, then I need to reach with my left hand up beside my body and then down the outside of the barrel to the bottom where the tap is located, for this to be possible I need a 12 ft arm or failing that I hinge in my spine so I can flick my leg round then pray that I have a grip like a bugies claw with my left foot in order to get sufficient grip on the external part of the tap. Let me say neither of those happened and I now have sunburn where I would only let my mother apply lotion..God rest her soul..

The visual is hilarious, if you want my opinion! :D:D:D

Get one of those things in the link. Always handy. ;)

PS I was looking at water tanks yesterday, so I can very well see it!

Sorry, I can't quite visualise. Can you take a photo with your other hand please? :D

Have you got any silicon gungy stuff - that might hold one bit in place sufficient for you to get the thread started?

My water butt had the "nut" embedded in the plastic, so I only had to worry about the tap part.
