I just bought today a book '1001 container plants' for £1.99. The author suggested many plants but said that he had left out fully hardy plants as they would do better in a border.

What I liked is that it seemed to be saying how long the plants flower for, which has always been of interest to me. It has a start and end month for flowering - eg 6 to 8, though its not clear if the plants flower continuously or intermittantly. I have assumed that the plants flower from the middle of the first month to the middle of the last. ie 2 months. On that basis, I have entered the longer flowering ones on a spreadsheet and sorted them in order of long flowering. I am surprised how long some flower for, though I haven't heard of many of them. The results are :-

Edit - I am sorry, when I initially entered the data it displayed it properly as a table, but doesn't when posted

Genus, species, months in flower, Min temp in winter
    Adenium obesum 8 0
    Cryptostegia grandiflora 8 5
    Euphorbia Geroldii' 8 5
    Jasminium nitidum 8 0
    Reinwardtia indica 7 7
    Begonia many 6 5
    Beloperone guttata 6 5
    Cestrum aurantiacum 6 2
    Clerodendron fragrens 6 10
    Impatiens 6 6
    Scaevola aemula 6 2
    Streptocarpus saxorum 6 10
    Trachelospermum jasminoides 6 2

If anyone is interested I have the full spreadsheet with more entries and the first and last months identified. Just PM me with your e-mail address and I will send you the file.

I have had a couple of PM's and will be contacting you.

I have two different spreadsheet tables I am willing to send as files, if anyone is interested.

The first is the fuller table of the above data. But looking at it more closely (I only got the book today), there are no normal hardy perennials as I explained, consequently the list contains a lot of fairly obscure plants. They are obscure because most of them need protection over the winter and are consequently not so often sold in garden centres. These will certainly interest some of us, but they are probably more related to house plants or tropical plants - so may not interest everyone.

The second table contains the plants that I grew in my garden around 2005 to 2007. Its the record of how long they flowered for me, and will contain many more normal plants such as hardy perennials.

I am happy to send both tables.
