now I need to ask about copper bands, is it the depth of band or the copper? I asked Martin for some copper bands and he made me some very thick copper wire ones and so far they have keps B*****s off - but sadly not one of my valued asarums.

so what is it with the copper bands that does the trick?

Waco usually I use copper tape round pots and round the legs of my benches in the greenhouse I have also got the bench legs stood in those copper scourers yo get from wilkies, plants like your hosta I use pieces of copper pipe flatened out or you can use copper swarf or chopped up bits just make sure there's no gaps, the width is about one inch
