Whilst cooking the tea i happened to look up to see a huge flock of seagulls....that's the signal to then go outside and look on the ground.....round here it's obviously the day the flying ants take off....the telltale signs are firstly the Seagulls then the swams of none winged ants coming out of every crack and crevice and even up through the lawn...it fascinates me every year.....going back a few years you could bank on it being around the 24th of July round here but times are a changing and instead of the massive influx they seem to go in 'shifts'....and later than i remember.....they certainly keep the chooks entertained as they dart around trying to catch them.....It's worth a glance upwards to see if they are on the move where you are:dbgrtmb:

Yep Loli, I have noticed this every year, although it has been less noticeable in the cooler summers recently.
This year I've seen it on two occasions already.
I'm not sure but I think they all have wings when they leave the nest.
Not an expert on ants by any means though, but they are interesting.

I've noticed that when the winged Ants come out all the normal Ants appear too... my paths are swarming with them...but then as you see the Seaguls move further along the sky you know the 'shows' over.....and the winged ones have flown and the non winged Ants go back to underground:dbgrtmb:

Never knew about the seagull/flying ants, loli

I did noticed in the morning yesterday that flying ants were about. I was sat outside, in the shade, tempting Princess Yappiness with some water and food. Every so often she would suddenly spin on the spot and "sit" so fast, it was quite weird looking. *That* is when I saw the flying ants crawling along the floor: she had ants in her pants!

But, now you come to mention it, I had noticed that the pond was seagull free this year (we've credited Ozzy with that), but yesterday there were a few about but they didn't land or hang about (we credited Ozzy with that too :heehee: )

Yep I've noticed this every year since I was a kid. I usually notice the seagulls first then the ants.

doesn't work for us im afraid as the last few years we always seem to have seagulls around almost all year, we are quite near the sea/beach but they never really bothered coming here before
