I am hoping that I will be inundated with advice on this thread!!

We are now getting to the stage in our garden where we are buying plants, and looking to create the atmosphere that we want.

I would like to have a rose on the wall of our house, near the front door. My wish list includes scent (of course), repeat flowering, a height of about 12-15 foot with time, did I mention scent? Hips in the autumn would be a bonus, but not vital for this plant...

We would also like a rose to climb a young oak tree, ideally with not too many thorns (as our bins are stored behind the tree), scent would be good, but friendly to all insect pollinators, and hips are the main priority for this one. The oak tree is currently about 15-20 foot high.

Next on our wish list is some shrub roses. Can be fairly large, as we have the space. Again, repeat flowering would be good, and scent is important.

You may notice no mention has been made of colour. Probably because we like all colours! So far we have two Winchester cathedral roses (I'll post a separate thread about them as I'm sure they are not the same!), a type or rugosa rose, which has not had too many flowers on it this year, but huge hips are forming, and my little miniature pink roses. This is nowhere near enough roses for us!!

Advice on varieties to consider, when to buy / plant, and where to source them from would all be gratefully received. Although we live in Belgium, we will be making regular trips back to the UK over the next few months (due to a family illness), and can have plants delivered to a UK address, so it would be nice to have positive associations with these journeys too.

I'll put the kettle on, shall I? :D

      Oops! Forgot vital info.
Our soil type is mainly sand, with sand mixed in, although next to the house is clay (but we can find some sand to mix with that!)

Climate is fiercer than Midlands UK. Winters are longer and colder, if the last 10 years is anything to go by (-15 was normal), whilst the summers can be hot and dry.

Have a look through this thread Sian and see if anything takes your fancy. :)

I bought all my roses bare root last year as they work out a lot cheaper, you can order now but they won't be delivered until November when they are dormant.

Floribundas are probably the hardiest of the shrub roses, they are multi-headed and repeat flowering. Watch out for the differing heights between them though.

I've used the following Nurseries and have been pleased with the plants and packaging from all of them. :)
