Well ages ago when the guys in teh flat next to me moved in i mentioned i was hoping to sort out the garden. They said they couldn't be bothered with theirs at all, which is a shame. They have a beautiful classic shaped deep red rose in their garden, i remember it from the summer. They said if i ever wanted anything to take it i could, and of course, just nicking plants right out of the soil when its not your property isnt such a grand idea as we're both renting.

But today i suddenly remembered it was there so popped into his garden and took some snaps of it.
Is there anyway i can take cuttings from it? Is there any point? How can i partially pinch it if there is a point?

Here it is! Can someone identify it without the flowers?

Can't identify the rose without its flower, but it looks a bit like a climber the way its been grown. Yes you can take a cutting - take a piece of strong healthy growth - about 12 inches long. Cut it just below a leaf node. Then sink it in a sheltered part of your garden - and forget about it. It will either take or not - but it takes a time, so leave well alone - other than looking at it for a good six months.

Aha okie dokie. I'll take a good few cuttings and put them in some good deep and wide pots and i know just the spot to put them. I'd put them into the soil but theres a chance we're moving within said 6 months.

Hopefully at least one will take. Its such a beautiful rose when its blooming.

Do take lots of cuttings, Whiley - I've never had a lot of success with rose cuttings, with generally just a few out of a load taking (very scientific wording, I know!) Best success has been with climbers, though, and I agree with Fran, definitely a climber (possibly a rambler, but don't think so).

It mayb e possible to give you a few names for your rose as they don't all have such nice hips. I'll have a look later when I have some time, and see if I can come up with a few names. Do you know if it is scented?

I dont honestly recall if its scented, but i can certainly find some photos of how it looked in the summer? I can remember the flower shape and colour perfectly, as it is my favourite type. [IMG]

Thank you, i'll hopefully get some tonight! :D
