I bought four seeds back from Ibiza last year. Three have grown into huge strong plants with large leaves and have survived the winter in the conservatory well. Now what? I know nothing about them.

I've got one of these at the back of my allotment that was grown from a seed from a tree on a neighbouring plot, which just goes to show that they can fruit in this country, although I think it is fairly rare occurrence. They flower very late in the year, and then the set fruit has to make it through the winter before starting to swell in early summer. The fruits were only very mildly flavoured though, having a fresh taste, but not particularly sweet or fruity. Be warned, these can make very large trees, that I would not say are particularly decorative.

On that occasion several years ago when my neighbour's tree fruited and he gave me some, he could tell me the name of them in Greek and in Italian, but not in English, so I took some specimens including seeds to RHS Wisley for an ID. They told me, and asked if they could keep the seeds because they didn't have a specimen. Shortly afterwards they had a loquat on display. So if you ever visit Wisley and see a loquat there, it probably came from a seed from the tree on my neighbour's allotment!

To be honest, I'm contemplating cutting my one down, and getting something more useful. A damson perhaps.
