Love the idea in this article of putting planters along the streets to liven them up a bit

Looks so nice and would certainly cheer me up walking past it.

I wish we could establish something like that in my neighbourhood, but there are a few too many chavs that would spoil it for everyone.

Good luck to those that have a go though.

That's if the council didn't stop it first due to health and safety reasons as illustrated by the article!

Our town is relatively small but we do have extensive planting of summer bedding (well its always planted all year round, the plants are continually changed) and there are troughs attached to the safety fences alongside the roads and baskets on the lamp posts etc. The gardens around the town hall are also very well kept with some choice shrubs, there are also several large raised brick beds throughout the town all planted with small shrubs and perennials.

The bedding is watered every morning and once a week its all dead headed :dbgrtmb:

I think it looks bloomin' luvvly Merle. What a pathetic mob of jobsworths ...:wallbanging:.
I wish the residents of Rockcliffe Avenue continued enjoyment and success in their quest to maintain their community planting scheme in the manner that they wish it to be,

I think they should be congratulated for improving their local community, too few people take a pride in their locality, you are unfortunatley more likely to come across discarded fast food containers rather than a planted up common area round our way .

I have a few plants that creep through the fence onto the very wide pavement outside, a fringe of mahonia at the base, a well-controlled pyracantha and a waterfall of Virginia creeper, again, regularly trimmed. I have people rave (I mean it!) about what a fantastic, uplifting amenity to the neighbourhood it is. From the council I get the annual letter telling me to cut it back or else they'll make me. One year there was even a photo, creepy.

Looking at the street in Whitley Bay I would have thought there was enough room for as many wheel-chair users and blind people that might use it. Perhaps they could just tidy up the corners and any pinch points to satisfy the council? Or is it a case of ban everything in case they get sued?

I'm absolutely speechless at this story! Have these council officials actually disappeared so far up their own backsides that they forget they serve the the local community and are not employed to destroy it?! Also where does this grant funding come from? So we as a nation are tightening our belts but these idiots want to waste £8K on unnecessary replacement plant pots?! Words fail me! :mute:

At 6.30am, I went down to my "gifted" bed in the High Street to cut and remove the old Spring plantings , weed and fluff up the bed. It has struggled over the last month with the wind and the cold ( it's on the north side) but at leasts it's tidy for the Battle in Bloom judging on 18th July,
