I'm creating a new, small, slightly raised bed for planting some herbs in. I decided to use 12" border edging to go round the edge (as planters are so expensive!) but am wondering the best way to create a circle to go round. Have considered bricks, sticks, and a few others. I WAS going to use a cut-down recycled water butt... but someone binned it.

So, any great and wonderful ideas?

    How large across?

Once I saw one of those big big round wooden rolls they use for carrying cables when building roads and such sawn and turned into a planter. The "middle" part was the walls of the planter and the flat mmh, lets say "brim" was alla round the edge and served as a bench. Very nice and cunning, if you can find one of these things and get into the garden. Theese are the things I mean:

Ah, the cats play things! very big cats of course...

It will only be about 90cm (~36") across. I do, however, like your idea very much and will keep an eye out for any old cable drums:)

    So I went with this...

Pegged the inside of the edging and screwed in place, plastic barrier around the inside and fill with compost/sharp sand:)

New herb planter for fraction of the cost...done!

That looks really nice, also looks natural too. I made a small raised bed using a bamboo edge as the wall, now it's weathered it looks like it's been there all the time.

I like that too. I've got those as edging for my beds so I might pinch that idea LOL

That looks great Loofah, what a good idea. True, planters are expensive. It's great how inventive us gardeners get isn't it!, lol.

I think maybe a few people will pinch you idea:)
