I am going to have another go at lupins, but this time I am going to keep them in pots in the greenhouse over winter and not plant them out until they are well established next year.

When is the best time to sow them? And am I best to sow them outdoors given how hot it can be in a greenhouse at this time of year?

The varieties I have are both Russell Strain - "My Castle" & "The Chatelaine"

I sowed some home grown seeds, grew small 1st year plants then half died off from excess rain this spring.
So IM going to gather more seeds this year, plant them but protect them from the cold and wet.Coldframe time with the soil warming cables and Inkbird thermostat.

I am thinking that September will be the best time to sow them, and sow them outdoors but take them in if the night temps drop?

Same happened with mine grown from seed and bare root, got too wet and rotted :( was told leave them out as they're hardy but they were started in my porch.. will keep them in my porch I think this time round until frosts have passed. I started my seeds in Feb last year though.. Sept you reckon FC?

          00000000000000000000000000015810Hi FC,

I've always sown perennials during June and the first couple of weeks of July.

This gives them time to establish themselves during Autumn and early Winter.

I've never thought it good to keep hardy plants inside during the Winter.

You have to remember that a lot of plants need a cold snap to initiate the flowering process for the following year.

          EDIT...........

Reading the above posts about rotting off etc., i wonder if this was because .....

          A) The plants were planted too late in the season to " anchor " themselves into the ground, remember that Lupins have a long tap-root.

          B) Also remember that drainage is very important to Lupins, they don't like sitting in damp, moist soil.

Thanks @Anthony Rogers :dbgrtmb: - I must admit, I didn't think of that.

@Linz - I was purely guessing to be honest, and the advice from @Anthony Rogers makes infinite sense. I will get mine sown through the course of this week.

I think you'll be alright @ fat controller and @Linz , I'm still sowing perennials and biennials now for next year. I'll probably give it another couple of weeks before I finish.

Another way of thinking about it is to imitate what Mother Nature does. If the plants are setting seed now then MN thinks that it's the right time now for the next cycle of growth to begin.

Yeah I was thinking of starting some off around now @Anthony Rogers. And with my plants rotting off they were being potted on every so often..and then xmas time I left them fend for themselves.. :rolleyespink: I didn't get them in the ground.

Perhaps we could all start some off now, and keep track of them through the next year :)
