    New gardener ignoramus here!

My lysimachia is just about dying off... I've tied some of it up as it is straggly. My next-door-neighbour wants some eventually. Do I just leave it to do its own thing, or do I cut it down, please?

Which sort of lysimachia? I have got nummularia, all over the garden, and 'outback sunset' in hanging baskets. Neither is dying back at all, and I don't expect it to until the frosts.
Has yours been affected by dry weather? if so cut it back and water what remains, it should be OK. You can take cuttings very easily or layer it [but it would have to be watered] if you want some for your neighbour.

Lysimachia which ever type likes it wet and cool - well no wonder it does not like present conditions!

give it right conditions and it will just take off and you will be able to just pull a bit of root up and pot it on. I have about 6 varieties, I think you can see som under "loosestrife" in wildflower section.

Thanks for your responses. As far as I can make out, it is loosestrife, and yes, it has been particularly dry in the Fens, no more than a dampening in weeks here in Wisbech.
