    Hi all

I've been recommended the above rose as an excellent climber for the back of my border, to climb over a fence. When is the best time to plant it out-winter or spring?

I've little experience with climbing roses so what does bare root etc mean?

Means it comes to you without soil around it, not in a pot. Usually backed wrapped in wet newspaper surrounded by wood chips or shredded paper.
As soon as you get it, take it out and put the roots in a pail of water, they will need a good drink, then get the hole ready.
I am not sure it matters, at least here it does not matter, either spring or winter, just make sure it get enough water and the hole is properly prepared, not just soil, needs some peat and a little compost, and the diameter about 3 foot by 3 foot and that deep.

    Hi Sussexgardener,

How are you planning on training it-wires or do you have a trellis up?

Will probably use wires. It will be growing up a fence which has no supports for a climbing rose, and I am wary of trellises after one collapsed years ago on me

Its a beautiful rose. I think its one my parents had in their garden years ago-bloomed for ages, smelt divine and was as tough as old bricks.

    Hi again,

I would appreciate it if you told me how you went on with wires, I have trellises, but they are screwed to the wall so fingers crossed
