Back in March I mentioned that I had sown a couple of rows of Maestro carrots that were supposed to be carrot fly resistant along with some Flyaway and someone asked me (I can't remember who) to post my findings.

Yesterday I took the first thinnings of the Maestro and had a bunch of carrots between 3' - 4' long that were absolutely pristine with no trace of carrot fly damage whatsoever. The tast was excellent and in my opinion far superior to Flyaway which I have tried before. In short, excellent full flavoured carrot without the hassle of the dreaded fly.

The thing is Steve, you tend to get the fly after pulling the first carrots. They are attracted by the smell. So still be alert.

    Hi Dave,

It's the smell of the brusied foiliage (so they tell me) that attracts the critters so I'm going to keep an eye on them over the next few weeks. Basically I removed all the thinnings and any leaves that were damaged from the site as a precaution but I think vigilance is the name of the game.

Flyaway proved resistant when I tried them a few years back but I wasn't that impressed with the flavour which is where the Maestro seems to be a big improvement. I'll report back in a week or so with some photo's of the crop.
