Surely we've all seen the TV ads. Build a spitfire, build a sailing ship, build R2D2. First issue only 1.99.

Imagine, several weeks in, you go to the paper shop for the next issue. It's not in. You trek round every paper shop in town, it's not there. Your project is stalled.

Imagine even worse, and month later, there's the latest issue. Not the one you couldn't get, the one after. Imagine how frustrating that would be.

I got sucked in to making a doll's house when I was younger.. wanted to spend my £5 a week pocket money on it. They stopped stocking it after the second issue, heart broken!

When I worked in a local newsagent, many years ago, the first few weeks were sale or return, after that you have to order.
I love adding these up, usually first issue 99p then £3.99/£5.99 thereafter, for 50/60/100 issues, and as @clueless says always seemed to be an issue missing.

Anyone want to start collecting 'How To Make Money Out Of Plants And Flowers'? You don't have to go to the newsagent to get it. Just send me a £5 deposit (plus £2.99 p&p) and the magazines won't cost you anything after that. :dbgrtmb:

I recently saw an ad to make a robot, R2D2 or something. £1,99 first issue and I thought it said £8.99 subsequent issues, 100 issues total !!! They have got to be joking. What kind of dodo doesn't read the fine print ... I guess the same person would help that Ethiopian man get his millions out of his country. There should be a law prohibiting such daylight robbery.

My son has asked for the new mathematics one, first issue is 99p and then £8:99 thereafter. Nearly £550 in total. The answer was no.

Unfortunately Iran somehow managed to obtain issue 4 of 'Build your own nuclear reactor' magazine.

I just use pebbles off the beach. Small pebbles for units, larger ones for 10s, and big cobbles for 100s. I can't lift the thousands so I never count that far.

I was waiting for this thread - for sure, I knew I couldn't be the only one who could see that these things are only a tax on the gullible.

The worst one at the moment is the DeLorean - even assuming that you manage to get each and every copy, the thing will cost you near on £1200 by the time it is done! For £1200 I would expect a full size, real DeLorean and a runner at that!
