I saw this magnolia a couple of days ago it was very distinctive as it had huge blooms and really stood out as the other trees in the wood were still bare. Just wondering if anyone knows which one it is? It was very tall 30ft or more at a guess, and is on the edge of woodland. Most magnolias I’ve seen have been more compact and “bushy” compared to this one although maybe it’s had to grow tall to compete with the woodland around it? It really stood out and the blooms looked like big hankies hanging from the branches!

There are lots of varieties which will grow into quite large full size trees. The flowers look like they might be a soulangeana variety. I couldn’t guess the specific one. The setting may have influenced the growth but there are also magnolias which are naturally more compact and bushy as you describe and these are more suitably sized for domestic gardens

It looks very similar to the type I see around here with flowers varying in colour from pink to almost purple, from a distance.

They are also the white flowered short bushy types.

That one looks a bit thin, either its nearly finished flowering or the surrounding trees are affecting its growth.
