Hi, I have recently planted a Magnolia Soulangeana which is supposed to do well in clay soils. However some of the leafs are gradually turning yellow and then brown. Have tried adding food containing iron but it has had little effect, does any one have any idea what the cause and cure might be?

Leaves turning yellow and then brown - sounds like a root problem to me.

From your area and it being planted in clay - could it be that it just got too wet?

Hi Stroudy, when you say recently - how recently? If it was as recent as June or July then it is having resettlement problems. A feeding with tomato food may help. And (sorry for this) keep it fairly moist. If it was moved in spring then it is rather more baffling. Have you examined it for insects? I hope it wasn't, as Fran says, in the floods (or even soaked for a long period). I have had one for a couple of years and apart from the fact that the snails and slugs think it is a delicacy, have had no problems. If it continues, can you post a couple of pictures of the plant and the leaves?

The plant was planyed in June/july, having previously been potted. I have got some general feed liquid and will try that. I have some pictures and the links are:

The brown spreads and darkens until the leafs fall off. This takes only a few days.

    Hope that helps

Can you give us a picture of the whole plant.

Looking at the leaves in your picture, I'm inclined to agree with John.. June/July is very late to plant a shrub - fortunately with this summer survivable. But it would help to see the totality.
