I'm having major problems with my computer at the moment :(.

I can't be sure what the cause is but I suspect that it only happened after I downloaded the latest version of AVG. It also offered to do a check and cleanup of the computer.

Since then I haven't been able to access Outlook or IE8. So no emails (I can still go in through the web but can't get to my address book -1,500 addresses - or stored emails - over 3,000 of them).

Although I can surf the web through one of my other browsers I can't access my favourites which are stored in IE8 - I'm with BT and they have their own version of IE8.

When trying to open Outlook it comes up with a report:-

"Cannot open your default e-mail folders. Errors have been detected in the file D:\New Folder\Outlook.pst"

I can't understand why it is looking at the D drive.

My hard drive is split into two with D supposedly for backup. I've not used it or looked at it for years. When I now look at it there is a file 'Outlook.pst' with 1,581,265 KB in it. That may be old .pst files that were stored years ago and it shows them as having 'Date modified' as yesterday simply because the computer tried to access them.

I've done a 'Restore' to before I downloaded AVG 11 and used the 'Office 2010' disc to do a repair on Outlook. No change. I have someone coming to look at it tomorrow but he has already said on the phone that he hasn't heard of this happening before.

What worries me is that if we try to reinstall Office 2010 we will lose our address book and stored emails.

Reloading the BT version of IE8 would only be a bit of a pain as BT has all our favourites stored so we won't lose them.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Try not to get too technical :flag: as I'm not all that computer literate. Thanks :).

 Hi shiney, well if you have gone to your restore point before you did the download & it is no better, why not try taking AVG off for a moment....

:doh:I had problems with AVG 2 yrs ago where it caused a conflict like that in my PC with Windows & Explora.. As soon as I un-installed AVG it went... So I now use Avast instead of AVG... AVG is known to have conflicts like that.. I find Avast is much much better all round & far easier & superior to AVG on the PC...... Plus of course it is free, but much better.. You register with them & it updates every day & tells ytou when it catches something & also stops you entering iunsafe sites & they have back up help desk too...

    Thanks Marley, :luv:

I shall uninstall AVG 11 and, at the moment, the restore point has taken me back to AVG 9.

My BT internet IE8 home page has AVG built into it  by BT and holds any link I make and reports to me whether it is safe. So I'm not sure what to do about it at the moment. With my own AVG it also updated every day and reported back to me.

I'll wait until tomorrow when my friend, who does this for a living, comes to have a look. As he hasn't heard of this happening before I think he is trying to check through his professional sources. I was hoping that if someone else had heard of this particular problem I may have had a head start.

Sorry Shiney, I haven't heard of your problem so I can't help - only confirm that I had problems with AVG about a year ago and swapped to Avast (same as Marley). Since then, touch wood, no real issues.

See if this helps for your .pst files Shiney -

    And this for Favorites -

A couple of points to ponder -

If you are using BT Yahoo Mail you can leave all your addresses and mails on the BT server. I used to use Outlook and Outlook Express and always stripped everything from the server down to my PC. This was fine until I had a really serious HDD crash and lost a load of addresses etc (luckily I'd some that I'd downloaded to our laptop so didn't lose the lot) I now leave everything on the web servers which also means I can access stored mail and addresses from any PC.

The version IE of supplied by BT is a bit slanted towards the desires of BT rather than the needs of users. You don't have to use it and can simply download or install from CD the standard MS version. I've been with BT for years but have never used their version of IE.

I'm running AVG 9 (free version) and have never had a problem and moved to it (after using Bit Defender) on recommendation of a friend who is THE IT Pro for one of our Police Forces and who uses it himself at home. Having said that, the AV software market changes year on year or month on month and 'Best' now may not be 'Best' in a month or so.

Some AV programs when doing an initial full scan can identify problems that don't exist and you really need to be a bit careful about what you let them delete or move to 'quarantine'

    Thanks John :thumb:

Thanks for the links, Dave, I shall have a look at them. :gnthb:

I was running AVG 9 with no problem at all. I suppose that I shouldn't have downloaded the latest version until all the bugs had been removed from it. :(

The reason that we use Outlook to download and store our emails is that we have three email accounts and receive over 100 good emails per day. We found that having to log in to three different accounts regularly throughout the day was quite tedious. My normal procedure is to log on in the morning to check the 'Spam' boxes and then let all the good emails download to Outlook throughout the day.

I used to back up the emails and address book but when my version of Outlook change they changed where they were stored and I have never got around to finding where that is. :dh:

I'm not too bothered about the Favourites because they are stored at BT anyway. BT had originally told me how to get the Favourites into Firefox (which I also have on my computer) but it didn't work.

I'll update you all when the repair man has been. :)
