Looking to do a bit of dead heading today - I'm utterly confused as to what a new bud and a spent flower look like.

    Is this a new bud?

or is this a new bud?

How can I tell which buds are going to seed and need taking off?

Thought I'd throw in this last picture of Bobby the Bee - no particular reason....

I always dead head when the dying flower head is still attached, so have no problem but that I'm sure is a new bud.:dbgrtmb:

I think the first pic is a dead head and the second one is the new flower. Maybe wait and watch a couple days to see what happens. Im the same as @Upsydaisy in that I always deadhead as soon as a flower starts to fade. This does mean Im on deadhead duty everyday but it keeps on top of things spending 10mins a day doing it and also new flowers come much quicker.

I think the first picture is a flower bud yet to open, same for the second picture.
When the flower is dead the dry ends of the seeds poke out from the closed bud.

I think most are now F1 s so are often sterile.
