I'm a bit stunned. The boyfriend of a female friend of mine has posted a marriage proposal on my friends wall, for all of her friends to see.

The moment looked like it had been damaged a bit when several of their friends commented before she did, but my friend ultimately said yes.

Its kind of romantic, but its also a bit impersonal and on facebook. Mind you, and proposed to my missus in a pub (a nice pub mind), and got a round of applause from a grand total of one person (an older lady).

Maybe I'm getting old, but I always thought it was the custom to be there in person when proposing. But still, I'm sure its all good:)

Just wait 'til Facebook/Twitter/Google gets a marriage licence and there will be online weddings!

I guess all is down to how important Facebook is for you. If most of your interactions happen that way I can see the appeal of a marriage proposal infront of your friends there. The audience is more global, although they cannot clap their hands.

I think it's awful and impersonal. I'd rather be the first person to hear about it, not after everyone else has had a gossip about it first.
A proposal should be a private thing between two people.
Proposing in public is almost forcing you to say yes. Pressure is put on you to avoid embarrassment / humiliating the one asking.
It might even be a joke. How would you know.

Well I'm not sure I should comment on this as my opinion of social networks and FB in particular are pretty dire...

Really? Honest? NO Way? Wonder if that is a sign of how their marriage will be. LOL.

I'd have turned him down and told him to get lost! That is no way to start any long term relationship. :nonofinger:

I'd have turned him down too - but then, since I don't have, want or see the need for Facebook, he'd have been wasting his time anyway!

Just as a BTW - my husband proposed to me in what must have been the darkest restaurant in the world. It was supposed to be '... a romantic setting, where diners can enjoy the finest cuisine in the soft glow of candlelight' except there weren't anything like enough candles and, had it not been for the occasional glint of cutlery, I could well have been dining alone and said 'Yes' to anyone! (And to think it could have been George Clooney - except he was only 15 at the time!!)

While I don't think it is the best way to be proposed to, I don't think it is the worst.
