Cutting down on potatoes and wheat will not be a bad thing for many people.

I am not surprised to read it.. I agree our Bio-security is very lacking, so is other security for that matter but another story..

Whether better bio-security would be better on its own? I think not... All the time people are flying around the world spore/seeds etc will travel too....

          I think so
To little is done in this country about bio-security with things coming in and out, even with in the country it's bad go back to 2000 foot and mouth
I think people will be eating more as the crops are very good and the price may come down, one potatoe merchant has a lot of spuds from last year he could not sell
Wheat prices are all ready £30 a ton down from last year, but this can change if we get some bad weather with in the world then the prices will go up

Was talking to someone in America about blight control, she's not allowed to burn the infected plants, can't put them in the bin, the council said the only way she could get rid of them was to put them in the communal compost bin, thus spreading it to everyone else

Its what they call recycling, all things have a bin of their own, or will do very shortly.
Its only a matter of time before we all get yet another bin designated for blight affected spuds and toms.
              The world has gone crazy.
And I'd not stop at vetting plants entering the country.

I noticed on entry to Australia as well as stringent food smuggling checks we were asked if we had travelled in any agricultural areas, any passengers who had, had boots etc inspected.
Travelling across on a train from Sydney to Perth we we was stopped at the east/west border and all fruit, seeds and non packaged foodstuffs was collected for destruction. So as not to infect the food production regions.
I appreciate this alone will not be enough to achieve bio security but do we think we need to be more visible here with our entry checks, if not just to make folk think more?

Do we think the mail article is just a starting ploy to scare us into the acceptance of genetically modified crops?

No just the mail doing its usual alarmist thing.

Scaring us into GM would be a government led tactic.

Along the lines of global warming

Every state in the USA has more stringent checks than here it seems Adendoll.. We should be upping ours.. Maybe our Ash trees would still be safe from dyeing out if we had had more stringent Bio-security checks years ago..!!

Re Mail - Fair point! (Though article was nicked from the Independent:snork:)

But do the government not use the press to gauge opinion and reaction?

I agree, but would the EU allow it.
We are not really open to the more tropical kinds of stuff, but anything that can survive northern Europe can survive here.
But then we are so close, only 20 miles away, is there really much point?

They certainly should Pete.. There are plenty of fungi spores and diseases that attack our native plants and trees as in Ash Die back.. The government knew about it years ago but did not introduce controls until now... Too late it is already here, from diseased trees imported to nurseries etc in this country from the EU........

In the US you cannot take flowers, plant, bulbs fresh produce/meat bought in one state into the next state.. Or it was that way the last time when we travelled there & I cannot see it changing.. Especially if they are crop growing states.. I see no reason why cannot the EU be treated the same as the different states in the USA.. Except we are countries.. It could be done..! We just all need to get are act together.. That would certainly help us all... Well thats my thinking anyway..
