    .....because - when does an area of dusty earth covered with scruffy grass and many various weeds lose the right to be termed as a "lawn?" Mine is very bad; I've spent the last 2 summers clearing large previously neglected for 7 years garden (now have productive veg area, young fruit trees and bushes, reasonable flower beds) so the lawn gets mown but has really had no care. It is very large, takes ages to mow and may well not merit the description of "lawn."

      The dictionary definition describes a lawn as an area of grass. Wiki describes it as an enclosed area not necessarily of grass and dates back to medieval times. No lawn mowers then though, a scythe or sickle would have done the job instead. I think you and I would both lean towards the Wiki version. :biggrin:

      Absolutely - as long as I don't have to mow with a scythe!

          Way back in the '60's I can remember my dad using a scythe in my granddad's garden, it was never mowed but scythed a couple of times a year. :)
