I have recently had a turf lawn laid over an area of about 250 sq metres. The area was previously part lawn, part paved and an area where a large shed had been removed.
The guys cut up the existing turf and hand dug and levelled the remaining area. They told me the turf they used was for medium wear and was 7 seeded which would look good even during a drought.

I paid over £1600 for this work at the end of March 2010

The normal grass seems to be disappearing and meadow grass (I think its meadow grass) seems to be the predominant grass the level also appears uneven where this grass is growing.

I have regularly watered the lawn and cut it after three weeks as instructed and then cut for a second time last Sunday.

Am I doing something wrong or have I been ripped off?

Don't know about being ripped off because I don't know enough about the lawn.
If you stick with it then wait till its taken and in the autumn have a look at getting it scarified in two directions to get as much of the stuff you don't want as possible out and then overseed. Then give it a light feed.
