Hello gardengnom, and welcome to GC.

It could well be a Melia (sorry dendro) the Persian Lilac, Bead Tree, Pride of China, Pride of India. The "beads" are used in various ways, to make jewellry, inside maracas, etc.

They are very popular here and bloom April-May with lovely mauve clusters of flowers. The beads develop following these.

You can read about it here ...

Sorry, I don't see any leaves on gardengnom's picture, only the beads.

I'll try to get a pic of one of our when next I'm near one as they are "beading" now. Mentioning the Rowan, they are glorious here at the moment. Another beautiful tree.

Hi, woo, think we all got the same.

Glad you're here ... I learned something today. Last week I told you I'd send a "convoy" of my screech owls to get you because I didn't know what to say ... today I learned it is a parliament of owls. Very interesting! You learn somehing every day.

    Nice signature (not the owl).

And no, LoL - there wouldn't be any leaves on it! It's winter...... :D

Miffed, Pal? Moi?? No, I just had Charlie climbing over me and the lap-top, which led to a rather shorter style than usual..... :D

Dendro, obviously Pal, woo and I have the same problem (heaven forbid that it's not an infectious thing on GC). I see an unauthorized sign jumping out at me (as Dave's Garden is American I did spell it the American way). I can't see anything either.

Also, that I can see there are no leaves on this unfortunate person's photo, who is asking a simple question. So how do you know this specimen does not have "opposite leaves".

    Explain yourself, woman!

The only native trees in Britain that do have opposite leaves are the ash and sycamore (as all acers) - rowans (sorbus) have alternates. It applies to buds and stems - which are still there.... even though the leaves aren't there. Elementary, my dear Watson!

Can't help re the pic on Dave's garden - as I see it exactly as it should be, sorry!!! I'll see if I can get another link that works for others - looks like Pete saw it ok.....
