We moved into our new garden about a year ago and I am just finding out what some of the trees and plants are. I have identified one as a Indian Bean Tree. Does anyone know whether the beans that hang down from below the branches are poisonous or not?:lollol:

I'm with Treesurfer on this. It is almost certain you mean catalpa. Catalpa beans are not edible but not poisonous unless eaten in quantity. They are used in herbal medicines as a sedative. An infusion from the bark is also used medicinally. The roots are poisonous if eaten.

The Mexican bean tree is cecropia and is a rainforest plant. I was in Cairns in December and cecropia have been put on the 'search and destroy' list as it is very invasive - but couldn't survive in our climate. Their leaves look like palm leaves.

Hello, I'm sorry: I got the name wrong. It is an Indian Bean Tree, not a Mexican one, thank goodness. The same question though, with grandchildren rampaging around the garden: are the beans poisonous?
