I cannot bring myself to kill any animal (including insects) but I really don't want mice going to the toilet all over my veg. They destroyed any decent tomatoes before I managed to get to them in the greenhouse last year and today I've seen two in the garden. First time I've actually seen them.

I don't mind sharing the garden with mice but is there any humane way I can deter them from my greenhouse and the areas I am growing garlic & potatoes?

    thank you :)

you could always buy a humane trap and then let them go in a field or woodland area

If you catch the mice to release elsewhere. Take them a few miles away from home or they'll find their way back.

We used a humane trap and then gave them a holiday in a field miles away. Seemed to work. The bait we found worked best was chocolate!

      That is really humane :heehee:

The first thing you need to do is look after your seeds, it has been said a mettle container of sorts with a good lid, or just take them home with you, leave them in the car ect, if you have an allotment, the next thing you need to do is get rid of the mice (it would be very unusual if there was only the one) you must get rid of it, or when you plant in pots it will eat your seedlings as well (as there is still seed there) you have a few options some you may find OK, others you wont like at all, buy a cage trap, this will not kill it and you can then release it some place that it will not bother you again, but it will in all probability die after a very short time, as its a new habitat and food will not be easy for it to find in unfamiliar territory, all the rest will kill them, the next is a snap trap (I'm sure you're familiar with them) can be a slow death, but usually its quite fast, a sticky trap, the mouse sticks to it, and while it wont suffer its not a good way to hang around until YOU kill it, then there's the electric trap £20 you can get them for, clean easy and uses battery's, you will get about 20 kills before you have to replace the battery, I would myself go for this one, its a clean kill no blood and guts or trauma to the mice, so there you have it, hope that was of some help to you, Tony

thanks all. Shall try the humane traps and see if there are any smells that repulse them (e.g. peppermint or garlic) and grow that too... fingers crossed

I really do feel for you. Personally I can't bring myself to kill anything either... Good luck anyway
