In our outhouse, we have developed a rodent issue, so I purchased some poison which is basically coated grains of cereal such as wheat) and at the weekend I finally got round to putting them down. I sat one up the side of the chest freezer and I tucked the other one round the back of the washing machine. Both are located in such a way that even if the dogs did get into the outhouse, they'd never get near these trays, but as a belts and braces, of course, door is locked and everyone in the house was lectured within an inch of their life not to let the dogs in there.

On Tuesday, Mrs C asked me where I had put the trays (despite her being right next to me when I put them down) as she had looked and couldn't see them. "Don't be daft" says me... "they must be there..." except, when I went to look, they were not. Now, empty trays wouldn't have shocked me one bit - but both of the trays themselves are gone... gone without trace. I have had to buy more trays (arrived today) so I can put more poison down, but have you ever heard the likes?

I haven't heard of that but I've heard of mice steeling cheese out of a trap and not getting caught.

It's worth being aware that poisoning mice or rats can poison owls, and the mice might not die in the outhouse...

There must be teams of two, to pick up the tray at each end ........, or maximouse (aka rattus rattus)

Hope they haven't taken to chewing your appliances wiring, because its a known favorite trick.

I have got a mouse in my kitchen, despite having 2 cats, I suspect it was the cat that brought the mouse in. However I had this problem just recently and it worked with 2 humane traps, loaded with peanut butter.

Do you have the option of a paste-type bait in sachets, FC? Over the years I've found that to be much more effective than the cereal type. Bet the trays are under the appliances!

We have had, and still may have, mice, but I've never had them run off with the traps - or trays, in your case!!

However, I have put numerous snails in a lidded container in the shed, and they managed to remove the lid and leave trails all over the shed. I can just imagine the "heave, ho, chaps" - in snail talk of course!!
But they didn't TAKE the container.

As far as I could get in to see, yes - I deliberately blocked stuff in to make it hard for accidents to happen and of course to make things secluded for the wee critters to have a feast. Fresh trays have arrived, so I shall go again.

Screw them to battens so as to render immobile.

I would agree with rats. Mice chewed through the waste pipe of our dishwasher. That was when we were cat free, don't have those problems now but do get the odd rodent brought in.

Well, rats had crossed my mind too - and as we were on the way home in the car, I said the very same to Mrs C... "oh, yes of course we've got a rat" she said, as if I should know, so I queried it further, to be told of the size of the 'leavings' that she'd been cleaning up whilst I was away...

                    :poo:

Nice to be told, says I... "oh, I thought you knew..."

So, I will keep at it with the poison and see where we go. I think the owls are well and truly safe given that it isn't mice and we don't have any owls..

There you go, I mentioned up thread that a cat had brought a mouse in and the. Mouse made itself very comfortable in my kitchen. Peanut Butter proves deadly.
