last week i did hedgehog rescue (twas a hell of a day cos one of my most vulnerable neighbours had a house fire and she and dad got taken off to hosp they are well but the house is a state - slowly getting there and loads of washing at my house cos their machine got fire damaged)

any ways i caught the hedgie in the middle opf the afternoon running round the lane - had a white eye

off to the local vets with it - its blind snd both eyes are ruptured - i then organised a pick up by the local wildlife centre

the end result is that they want me to have her in my garden

she has to be well contained because of her blindness and i need to keep a good check on her in case of fly strike - cos she doesnt know the difference between day and night

the british hedgehog have confirmed this is the correct thing to do - and within the law- they also suggest i mark her in case she escapes

oh yes thats the other problem - she escaped at the wildlife hosp and is currently ranging in 10 ares of woodland but they would prefer her to be here cos they have traffic coming and going and really would like her monitored

shes a big lady at 1400g and i am hoping she will be here soon

We often get hedgehogs in our garden, so we're careful not to disturb them. I've probably mentioned this before, but a few months ago I was taking some rubbish out late one night and I saw one in the gloom at the end of the wheelybins by the back gate. I waited for a few minute for it to move but it remained perfectly still. Then I realised, it was the outside wheel of the furthest wheelybin.

thanks all and lol at doghouse riley - how long did you watch the 'wildlife for' - sort of thing i do

the british hedgehog preservation society have been very helpful and i had a long chat with them about a blind hedgehogs needs - you have to try and encourage a 'normal' pattern of behaviour so they do not spend lots of time out in the day

i will let you know if shes coming to stay

    Hi Loopy

It's nice of you to think about giving the hedgehog a home. Will you have to become nocturnal, in order to encourage a 'normal' pattern of hedgehog behaviour?

the bhps have said the best thing is to not feed at all during the day but to put food out at night

i think in the main it will be let chooks (feed) out put hedgie away

let hedgie out (feed) put chooks away

i have been offered a guinea pig cage so i can contain her for the short duration - the long term goal is for her to be free range in the whole garden

and she will need checking twice a day for fly strike - thats the hard bit apparently - but she didnt curl up when i spoke to her and i was within touching distance - she did curl when i touched her - this will be the bit i have to get right
