I am old newbie. I used to garden years ago and have retired now and want to get back into it but I can't seem to find any good mildew or fungus control or the one that I found could only be used on two occasions per season. What do members generally use? I did a search and nothing came up. Any help appreciated. Jim.

      Hi,

Now use Rose Clear Ultra spray to control mildew , it also seemed to control some fungus on my indoor Cyclamen overwinter.

Seems Bayer do a dedicated Fungus Fighter spray.

Not sure there is much out there these days regarding effective control of fungi for the amatuer.
Most have been banned by the EU.
Virtually nothing on edible plants, is effective, other than copper, which is not good in my opinion.

30% milk and 70% water in a spray in sunlight is said to do the trick. Have a google. Please spray at night if you use a chemical fungicide.

Thanks for your help all, it is as I expected that these garden sprays have been diluted by the Eurocrats for our own good, will have to try the milk and water. Thanks again.

Rather than use fungicides which are mostly ineffective after rain, it is better to try grow plants so they wont succumb to mildew........for example giving adequate moisture to susceptible plants. Understanding what various plants require will help them resist both diseases and pests.:)

I have just started back with a new greenhouse after 20 years doing shift work and not enough time for gardening. And although I have a fair idea of the basics, I am still feeling my way so to speak. I bought some peat free compost from Asda and I am not getting the results that I had hoped for. I will just keep trying and use as few chemicals in the garden as possible.

The composts available now are variable to say the least taurusmmuk :)
I now add john innes or sieved garden soil to mpc plus perlite or dried manure according to what I am growing and I find very few vine weevils and better sturdier plants.

I really bought the greenhouse too late to do much good for this season, or should I say that I bought it early enough, but had to wait 2 months to get it erected. I had grandiose ideas of doing it myself but it was too difficult when I looked at the instructions so I got the local fitters in to do it. It took them about 4 hours including time for tea and buns, but it was money well spent, the greenhouse is a Rhino Premium so it was worth the wait to get it erected properly.

But after all that I am hoping to get a head start for next year, I will be back with some more questions soon.

Okay. Greenhouse. Says it all. Get lots of air circulating and make sure you've got good ventilation.

Move as much air as you can. Get a cheapie oscillating fan. Anything like this will help greatly.

Agree with @CanadianLori ....got an oscillating fan going in mine as well as doors and windows open and (touch wood/fingers crossed etc) no sign of mildew problems in the greenhouse at all this year.

Outside on the other hand is a different matter....bought a concentrate of rose ultra clear so i can mix up to my own spec. Really dont know where it has suddenly come from as plants were doing so well and got plenty of ventilation. Can only think it is the humidity that has kicked it off on my collection of heucheras. :th scifD36:

I am going on a cruise at the end of July and I have the annual problem of setting up the electronic watering system. I have been doing it for years on and off with my wife's hanging baskets. We are going to Wales for this weekend so I am having a "wet" dry run trial if you see what I mean. It usually takes a few days to get the various drippers right, so when I get back on Sunday night I will have a good idea if it is working ok.

One other point, my tomatoes are growing like Triffids, but should I pinch the growing point out before I go on holiday? I will be away for 2 weeks and they will probably be up to the roof by then if I leave them. Any help appreciated.

Will rose ultra clear kill bugs and mildew, my wife has 2 miniature roses that were a birthday present and she loves them dearly and they limp on year after year and I wonder if this product would clear blackspot?

I inherited this nightmare when I moved house. 25+ lovely roses all with awful black spot. You need to cut out and burn all the affected leaves (do not leave any on the floor around the rose as the spores will remain and reinfect). Give the rose a good prune back when its the right time of year too to make sure you cut alot of it out. Spray with the rose clear ultra or similar when new shoots start. That one is insecticide aswell....lots of similar versions available though...bayer do them with or without insecticides. You just have to really keep on top of them...get rid of any leaves as soon as you notice any black spot. And try keep the leaves dry and let air circulate to prevent moisture and the fungal growth.
