how many people have been on a mini cruise?
i am just about to make a booking on a mini cruise .the mini cruise is for 5 nights. sailing from rosyth to zeebrugge then transport to Bruges. we would spend 1 night sailing ,3 nights in hotel then 1 night sailing on the return journey. it is a special birthday and i thought i would treat my wife and myself to something a wee bit different but i was wondering if any of you fellow gardeners have been on one of these mini cruises. did you enjoy it ?,any problems ? did everything go smoothly?.

interested in your comments . music

Music - I haven't been on one like you describe - but every September a bunch of us 'girls' would do a 3 night mini cruise from Vancouver BC down to either LA or San Francisco. All the time was on the ship - and it was an absolute hoot. As an 18 yr old I used to work on a cruise ship out of sydney as well - and to be perfectly honest - there is so much to do on a cruise ship, that as long as you don't get seasick - you are bound to have a blast as there is so much to do on board. The food is terrific, and you can have meal of your choice at any time of day, always entertainment, always activities out on deck - just a fun, do what you want to do, type of vacation.

How much time is actually spent on board the boat though - do you get to experience the ship life? Or is it a cruise for transportation purposes to a city break? Either way would be a great time!

I'm looking forward to responses on this subject. I like flying - hubby hates it. He loves ships - I hate them. BUT - I have agreed to look at short cruises for this year. The only time I went on a ship I was extremely seasick, but I am told it doesn't happen on these big ships (although Natalie's reply makes me wonder). Please help me make up my mind by sharing experiences as Music asks. :help:

No Clematis! I used to work on a cruise ship out of Sydney - and the ONLY time I noticed people being seasick was on the tail end of a cyclone approaching Bay of Islands in New Zealand. They are so big - the movement never bothered me. Hubby on the other hand just gets seasick going out on a small boat - and the only time I've been able to get him out on one (other than paddling in the canoe on lakes and small streams) was on a tri cat down in Naples Florida - even that was big enough he didn't get seasick and thoroughly enjoyed the day out at sea.

Clematis, lots of my friends in our village have started to go on Cruises mainly round the Med and only one of them has had problems with sea sickness so it might just be an indivdual thing.:)

Mr Kandy would never fly although I have flown once, but even now he wouldn't go on a large ferry over to Europe whearas years ago it didn't bother him.He is getting worse as he gets older:( The ferry over to the Isle of Wight is about his limit:D and he would never go on a cruise ship as he would hate having to dress up in posh togs, thats one reason why he enjoys camping, so that if he doesn't fancy shaving one day then he doesn't shave,he feels that he goes on holiday to relax and unwind not get dressed up for dinner:D

Good point about 'going on holiday to relax' Kandy!

Any of the cruise ships I have been on though, if you don't want to go to the formal meals, you really don't have to. You can sit out on deck with a buffet, pizza, whatever other food might take your fancy. You certainly don't have to dress up for the midnight buffets etc., and there really are so many food choices on board, that the 'formal' sit down meal isn't really necessary to ensure you are fed well :)

Back in my younger days :old: I worked for two years on the ships. Although things have changed considerably since then I still keep in touch with the cruise industry so have a bit of knowledge about how it is currently.

    music,
A lot of what it will be like depends on which cruise ship it is and the size of it. In theory the big ones will be much more stable in rough weather but almost all of modern ships have stabilisers so there shouldn't be much problem.

I must say that it sounds more like a cruise ferry than a cruise ship but I understand that they are quite good. You shouldn't need to take anything too fancy in the way of clothing so it would make sense to just have the equivalent of a carry-on case each if you can manage it. This makes you much more adaptable and mobile. Whenever travelling abroad it is a good idea to carry a photocopy of the main page of your passport with you just in case you lose your passport. I'm sure you will have a great time.

    Clematis,
I would suggest that you give it a go. It is rare that the cruise ships have much problems with motion when doing the med or northern Europe. As a precaution you can always go to the doc a few weeks beforehand and ask for some seasick tablets. They now make some very small soluble ones that you put under your upper lip. If you feel a bit queezy just pop one in your mouth but don't bother to use them unless you need them.

It would be best to book through a specialist cruise travel agent unless you have friends that work in a local travel agency. Tell them that you don't travel well so must have a cabin that is midships. Don't have one at the front or back because they have much more movement - although all the big suites are usually put at the ends because they can fit in bigger balconies.

Depending on which cruise ship you travel on the dress code can vary. Most modern cruise companies don't insist on 'black tie' but you should expect to have to dress 'smart casual' in the evenings.

In the past I have written travel guides and still work closely with travel companies (quite a few people on here know that I enjoy travelling to out of the way places :)). although I have never been on a short cruise I shall be experiencing a very short one at the end of this month. One of the major cruise companies is launching a new ship and they are having a sales pitch/viewing for travel agents and Mrs shiney and I have been invited by a travel agent to accompany them for the two nights viewing :yho:. It should be quite interesting as the ship is very large and will be able to take a few thousand passengers. I'll report back if there is anything worth saying.

We've been on several cruises - I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone. Incredibly relaxing, good food and the destinations come to you in a way. A mini cruise is a good way to try one out.

The last one we did was Christmas Markets in December - Bremen, Amsterdam and Bruges. Couldn't stop at Bruges though as Zeebrugge harbour was too icy, so that a bit of a letdown but the rest of the trip was great.

Don't forget your tuxedo if you have one. It's good fun dressing up for the formal night (there will probably be one) or at least a suit.

hehe to the hammock over the side......better than your own 'floating island' which I guess would be the life buoy out in the ocean eh?

Have a fantastic trip - can't wait to hear how you've enjoyed it :)

Thanks to everyone who responded. Everything is now on hold regarding some VERY big health issues. Please wish me luck and cross whatever you can for me. Thankyou.:)
