    Hi All,

I have bought a mint plant to grow in a pot on the patio as the wife likes it made into a "tea" and we use it on new potatoes and in the odd mojito. What size pot do I need to put it in, at the moment it is in a 3 inch pot.

Although mint is a thug in the open ground, like most bullies, it is subdued when overwhelmed/restrained. However, it still needs good soil......use a john innes number 3...and remember not to let it dry out or it will then suffer in the summer heat from mildew etc.

You can certainly upgrade it from a 3" pot with safety

In my previous garden, some kind soul had planted mint in a pot (quite a good sized one, but not a huge one) and submerged it into the ground. The theory being it would contain the roots and not invade the border. Well, it does, eventually!!

On my patio I have a chocolate mint in an old Quality Street (plastic) tub; I have a peppermint in a concrete "teapot" planter (maybe 8 inches across?) and I have some apple mint growing under a bay in a pot.

Think of it this way: the bigger the pot, the more you will grow! Perpetual leaf stripping will encourage more growth throughout the season. My mint has been "in season" since the beginning of this month and will continue regardless until later in the year when it will flower and set seed.

So, basically ... how long is a piece of string? ;)
