I have my very own first garden so will no doubt be on here a fair bit. For now some id help please. This twiggy stump has started putting out leaves that look like mint (leaves on opposite sides of stalk, rounded rather than jagged, slightly glossy but not hairy) and smell gently of mint. But it's not invasive and has shooted from this old woody stick. I've never seen mint emerge from a branch before! So is there something else? Maybe in same family?

Yes the stems of the green parts are squared, the woody parts are round though. It must be mint then. Is it usual to grow from a woody base like this? Is it just very old?

No not furry at all. I suspect it is a normal garden mint that has been here a very long time!

Hmmm........not sure that is a mint at all, growing from a single stem. How big are the leaves and is it definitely a mint smell? it looks more like a Salvia to me, like S microphylla. a close relative of mint and has square stems.

I'm not sure if it is definately a mint smell. It's definately aromatic like mint but not as strong as sage. Biggest leaves are approx 4 -5 cm. uploadfromtaptalk1436698198729.jpg

Ok still looks and sounds like a Salvia to me, but not microphylla. Hopefully you will have some flowers developing soon which will make it easier to identify.

When you cut the green stem, look straight down onto it. It is squared rather than perfectly round.
