I bought this rose last autumn, from a garden centre and labelled from a reputable grower as Ruby Mella, which I gather is a pheno-geno; it's grown on well in a pot, but now it's flowering I'm not at all convinced it's what it claims....
The colour doesn't match the photos I've seen of Ruby Mella, and to be honest I would never have bought it if it had shown as this garish coral pink! It's also grown rather bigger than expected...at least a metre tall....instead of 40-50cm as on the label, which may make it too big for a pot in the long run (and I really have no room in the ground for yet another rose....). It had lovely glossy dark leaves as it grew though now has quite a bit of black spot, and is very free-flowering but still not really to my taste.....
I can't find any rose to match the colour, let alone a pheno-geno rose, and I'm hoping someone may be able to identify it or confirm it's what it says it is and the picture was just misleading.

I'd not heard of Pheno Geno roses before, so have just looked them up; certainly your photo doesn't look much like the Ruby Mella on the Pheno Geno website! Is it worth emailing them with your photos? There are contact details for the breeder Peter Cox on another page of the website.

The weather and indeed the age of a rose can have a bearing on the colour of a rose so I wouldn't write it off just yet. Pheno Geno roses are an acquired taste to my mind - I have one and can't make up my mind whether I like it or not.

Have to say I would struggle to accommodate something that particular colour! :hate-shocked:

Indeed! Goes from coral to candyfloss pink.....my daughter has said if I don't like it she'll have it, and I'm beginning to think she's welcome to it!! Was really looking forward to a "rich ruby red" rose.......

If you can get the breeder and get confirmation in writing, you could go back to the garden centre, tell them it was mislabelled and see whether they're prepared to do anything. You might not get a full refund but possibly a partial refund/voucher. Worth asking anyway if it's a place that you g to from time to time anyway and not a special journey. The worst they can do is say no.

I'm not worried about getting a refund or anything, it won't go to waste even if I decide I don't like it enough. I do like to have correct names for things though! At the moment it's the "not-ruby-mella" :)

Have a look at Rosa Complicata, though I don't think that's quite right.

I bought a rose from Meilland last year that was supposed to be red, FRIENDLY ® Red Meiariba but it was pink. However, this year it's red, weird!

If you are able to get that information then you should be able to get a full refund anyway. Most suppliers would do that without confirmation from the breeder if the photos show a totally different flowering.

Its quite likely that the garden centre is blameless, apart from letting in the public.....
(Too ) often 'customers' lift the labels to read and then shove them back into any pot they see. This can be seen on seed display stands everywhere!

I rather like it more than the intended one :)

Do wonder if it's this one: Stadt Rom®

It could be, @amancalledgeorge , closest I've seen anyway. Though I wouldn't describe it as low, given it's at least 90cm tall already..... :rolleyespink:
Jury's still out on whether to keep it or pass it on, it's sort of growing on me...... Shame it's got as much black spot as all my other roses....and the sawfly grubs have found it now too......
