I planted a hedge last year hawthorn every 3.5m (11.48 ft) I planted a cherry plum nearly same size as the bare root hawthorn, should I keep the cherry plum same size as hawthorn and create a uniform flat top and sides style of hedge or should I let cherry plum grow up as trees in the hedge , what would look best? Altimate hieght of hawthorn hedging will be abound 5ft and hedge runs along a country lane for about 70m (229ft) in front of house that sits abount 3 ft lower than the lane , any opinions appreciated

Personally I think its nicer to have some trees sticking up from a mixed hedge and if it is done at regular spacing like you have done with your cherry plum trees it would probably look well. It may make it a bit more work in trimming the bits you want to keep at 5ft. The trees in the hedge could also help it act as a wind break with a barrier with gaps in it acting to reduce damaging winds better than a solid one.
    Happy gardening!

        Carolus avellane. Hazel.
        Hawthorn.
        Prunus Spinoza. Field Maple.

        Sorry Brickybrian,
        Technical point:
First is an African leopard ! I'd plant Prunus padus
        Common hazel is Corylus Avelan
For stockproof hedge 3 per metre with wire, or double row 5 per 2 x1metre

I'm all for experimenting with plantings especially if you're trying to keep the gazelles off the lawn!
As for Hazel, she might prefer to be called Carol:)
