The USB modem we have works really well with W 7 except for when the computer is put or goes into sleep mode. Then the modem has to be removed and replaced before it will work. This does not happen after a Resart or Shut down.
    Any ideas?
    TIA.

Drivers up to date and have to disconnect and reconnect to get it to work.

Has there been any changes to your telephone lines recently Palustris? I went through a stage of random disconnects - and when I finally had enough of it and called tech support - they did a line test, found that my telephone lines had been 'upgraded' and I needed a new router which they sent out free of charge as the old one couldn't handle the new lines (or something like that!) Now we have moved to a more rural area, and I'm having the same issue - thinking that our lines haven't been upgraded.....but gave the old router away on freecycle.

You seem pretty tech capable - so you've probably checked that :)

Even had BT engineer up the pole testing the line. And remember this is Dial up so no router in any case.

I suspect that the problem may lie in your USB power to the modem going down low and not shutting down completely and the modem just 'hanging' rather than switching off and on again.
One thing you could try if you've not done it already and if you have more than one set of USB sockets on the PC is to try plugging into another socket. Much depends on the architecture of the PC, but I know from experience that some USB devices do not function in the front sockets while they'll work fine on the rear ones..

I've never used my pc's sleep mode on any computer or operating system so I have not come across this before, but I'm intrigued to find out why you are still using "dial up" internet which is fairly old now.

Is it not available in your area?

    Regards.

Broadband is not available, we are too far from the Exchange and in a dead spot for dongle connection. We are lucky to even have a phone line.
The problem occurs on all 7 USB ports, tried em all, back and front.
There is a Check box in the Network adapter Power management area which says "Allow the computer to close this device to save power". Wondering what would happen if I unchecked it?

Uncheck it...if the pc is allowed to shut it down during sleep mode...then thats the problem solved..I would guess.

No effect/ What seems to be happening is that the Modem switches to Fax mode and only turns back to Dialup when removed and replaced.
