    Hi there,

Does anyone know whether the soil from molehills is suitable for container planting please? I need to know for some writing I'm doing.

I've read that it's only okay if used with other soils because it becomes claggy when watered. I'd be ever so grateful if someone had a detailed answer explaining why!

    Many thanks,
    Jane

    Jane,

Molehill soil, is the same as loam. Loam is formed by turves cut from pasture land and then being stacked for approximately 1 year. After that time it is cut up. It makes it a suitable medium for almost any plant. The finer soil from this process is usually used in compost.

I would imagine the reason it becomes claggy, is because it is not very free draining , I would add to your mixture sand or fine horticultural grit with particle size up to 6mm. This is usually used by 25% by volume with compost, to allow sufficient drainage.

    hope this helps.

    Nathan.

I would think that what you have is a central bud surrounded by roots. The bud should point upwards and the roots spread out.
