I have a long piece of Montana Rubens stem (no root), 3/4" thick, with a leafy stem coming out the side. I have had it sitting in water for just over a week and it seems to be alive as the leaves have not wilted. Does anyone know if there is a possibility of getting it to grow?
Looking forward to any help you can give me on this.

If you`ve just cut a bit of stem and plonked it in some water then probably not. the roots need to come from the area opposite the leaf node. Trim the stem back to about an inch either side of the leaves. Place the cutting flat on some compost with the leaves uppermost, make a couple of wire pegs to hold it in place, cover the stem with compost. Water lightly then enclose the pot in a clear plastic bag. Then, hope for the best.:gnthb:

Do as Dai says. It will probably make it as they are quite easy from cuttings.

Thanks very much for the info - just realised I've done it wrong. I cut the stem 1" either side of the leaves and then put one end in the compost. I think I should have put two ends and then anchored it. Is it too late? Also how long do I leave it in it's plastic bag? The leaves are beginning to look a bit manky, would that be normal? Thank you again for your help and I shall look forward to your reply. Sorry I'm such an idiot.

I would bin the cuttings you`ve already taken and start again. Leave the bag over the pot until the cuttings have taken.:gnthb:

Thank you very much again for your good advice. I had only the one cutting from my mum's garden so I went out the same evening and redid them. Now hoping for the best. Thanks again.
