I have some seeds for Moraea huttonii.

Has anyone any experience/tips on germinating these? Advice on tinterweb can vary from one extreme to the other!

    Any tips appreciated!

Hi Lonk. I don't know it - had to look it up. Its surprising that you don't hear more about it if it is hardy as sites seem to say.

I had a look in an RHS guide, and it says germinate at 16C to 21C. Takes up to 30 days (but that is their shortest category). "Species resents root disturbance - sow directly into suitable container".

I have added a picture for people like me who don't know it. Its a member of the Iris family - from South Africa.

      Thanks PeterS!

That's the advice that I went with for the first sowing too, but I never saw anything about the root disturbance. I didn't get my info from RHS though. I'll have to prick out as soon as they germinate then..........

I found the bit about resenting root disturbance slightly strange. As one of few sites that I looked at said that you propagate by division - wouldn't that be resented.

But as you say Longk - there are so many sites that seem to give conflicting information. I think its just as well that most plants can't read. I grew some Alstromeria from seed; the RHS guide said these resented root disturbance and should be sown into individual pots. But I didn't have the space for that. So I sowed them all in one pot and successfully transplanted them into individual pots at a later date.

I read the same thing about Asphodeline too, but had no problems. I do tend to prick out almost straight away though.
