Popped into Tescos yesterday and they have stocked up with lots of plants from bedding plants to young veg plants, large olive trees, cordylines, japanese maples, etc, etc.

For now they look lovely and healthy as they're all new in; I bought a couple of Japanese Maples - at approx 12-18" in height, very healthy and multi stemmed, well worth the £3 each I paid :dbgrtmb: . However one was a bit on the dry side, indicating to me that they're not going to water their plants on a regular basis, so buy now if there's anything you want before they 'dry up' :frown:

Thanks for the tip but i prefer to use local independent garden centres if possible. The very people who Tesco are trying to sink.

I must admit I've bought a number of bulbs and small plants etc recently from Morrisons. Very disappointed with results, e.g. bulbs not coming up, both Dhalias not coming up. Think I'll stick with garden centres in future, might be more expensive on the face of it, but not when compared to a 50% failure rate !

I agree with your statement Walter, but where I am there aren't any garden centres in the close vacinity, the nearest one is some 10 miles away, so its always worth a look for me in the supermarkets etc...

Len I think a lot of the supermarkets are guilty of stocking quality plants (in most cases) but then not bothering with watering them or they strore them incorrectly, hence they they go down hill very fast, that's why I only really consider buying fresh stock

I buy wherever it's cheap .... be it poundland, tesco, aldi, ebay or wherever ....

I don't support the small guys, neither do I support the big chains .... I support my family and pass on the discounts to my clients

at the end of the day, money is tight, and I will buy wherever I get the best deals .... it's dog eat dog

and I've never had a prob with anything growing ....

I popped in to Tesco earlier and they were selling loads off - 20 begonias or 20 petunias for £1.50, healthy as you like. I ended up with a couple of packs (as if I am short of plants!), which will force me into doing something with the cruddy area up the side of my driveway.

I was in Tesco's today as well. They had baskets of Petunia's for £3.
